Exploring the 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8
Saturday 15th of February 2020
About 2 months ago, I got the 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8 lens as a Christmas present from my wife. I’d been eyeing it up for a while, wondering if a fully manual lens would really be my thing. Considering I already own the two Fuji 23mm lenses (so more or less the same focal length), I wasn’t sure I really needed it. This is a remarkably inexpensive lens though: £79 from Amazon UK, so even if I didn’t r…

Some X-T2 + XF23/2 black and whites
Saturday 1st of April 2017
Another trip to Norwich today to get some Euros for our Malta trip on Monday. I hadn’t planned on making these pictures monochrome, but rendering one of them later as black and white made me think to give all the ‘good’ ones the same treatment. cycle path over foot bridge construction work on a building on King Street bush growing up a brick wall graffiti on a brick wall old man looking at market …

Gorleston, town
Monday 17th of October 2016
The second set of pictures from yesterday’s wander around more-than-just-the-seafront of Gorleston. I still haven’t ventured fully into the town centre (I think? maybe I have and this really is all there is to it and if I keep going I’ll be in Great Yarmouth ); perhaps next weekend! Shall try taking my X100 then, perhaps with X-E1 and 14 and 60mm lenses as backup. I hope the future Fuji 50mm f/…

Gorleston, see the sea
Sunday 16th of October 2016
Doesn’t feel like a week since my last wander around Gorleston seafront, and the weather was not so shiny this time, hence the black and white. This is kind of the first of two vaguely related posts; I took them on the same day, but more than that they both sort of illustrate aspects of Gorleston in a non-glamorous way. Used the 18 – 55 again. Still don’t like it. palm tree blowing in the wind broke…

OCOLOY Week 51
Wednesday 30th of March 2016
For this penultimate week, I decided to bend the rules a little, in that I actually used my X100 all week instead of the X-E1 and 35/1.4, thus foregoing the ‘one camera’ and ‘one lens’ aspects entirely. Not even the same focal length. But man have I missed the X100. I sent it to my brother months ago since he wanted to see if that 35mm-e field of view suited him before buying the equivalent lens f…

OCOLOY Week 50
Monday 21st of March 2016
Fifty! Only two more after this, the end feels so close now. I’ve started forming some vague ideas about what I want to do with the huge volume of photos I’ve accumulated over the past year (and a bit, since I stalled several times). Since most of the pictures are from within a few miles, I think I’m going to do a kind of documentary project about Lowestoft and the surrounding areas, possibly from…

OCOLOY Week 39
Sunday 6th of December 2015
I said last week that I was going to think about using a ‘Fuji Neopan 1600’ emulation for processing this week’s pictures. I decided to go ahead with this, and quite early on realised it’d mean having to keep it in mind when shooting, as it has a particular contrast and colour response that’s quite… ‘opinionated’. The usual preset I use has a more subtle aesthetic, and suits quite a wide variety…

Oulton Broad
Saturday 21st of March 2015
I recently went to nearby Oulton Broad , a large lake and marshland west of Lowestoft. Luckily the weather was shiny, and although a little chilly, by the time I’d done a fair amount of walking I was plenty warm. Hopefully when the weather warms up a bit more Zoe and I will go out here for a picnic, and have a walk around the local town. Oulton Broad looking east from Bridge Road The view east …

OCOLOY Week 7
Wednesday 4th of March 2015
After a bit of a slow start Wednesday to Friday, the weekend was really productive for me: each day I went on a nice long walk up Lowestoft’s main shopping precinct and high street, then back along the seafront. On Sunday the weather was cold and grey and windy whereas Saturday was bright and sunny (but still pretty cold and windy). Surprisingly though I feel like the pictures I took on the dull g…
