Acros is better than I thought
Saturday 23rd of December 2017
Since I got my XT2, I’ve never really given the Acros film simulation a shot, but lately I’ve been trying it and been pleasantly surprised. I don’t know if I just didn’t have the right highlight and shadow contrast settings, but it’s got a lot of subtleties that I hadn’t appreciated before. The way the colour filters (e.g. Acros +Y) affect rendering is lovely – not too strong, but enough to make a…

Fujifilm X-T2 review
Saturday 6th of May 2017
I’ve had my X-T2 for just over 3 months as I write this, and used it extensively, particularly during a week long holiday in Malta , so I’m confident that I now have enough experience with it to have something meaningful to say. I’ll be honest, though, this is mostly just my thoughts on things I value in cameras. First, some context I’ll say upfront that this review (if you can even call it that)…

Norwich, winter sun
Saturday 19th of November 2016
Autumn is almost over, with the temperatures heading well into full on winter territory – today was a mere 2 ° C, partly due to the clear bright sky. What it lacks in colour, winter makes up for in great light that lasts all day. Took the 18 – 55 out for a spin again today, and again it disappointed me. I had an idea that it was the image stabilisation that was causing the lack of sharpness, but t…

Pakefield and Kessingland Beach and Cliffs
Monday 22nd of August 2016
Just a bit south of Pakefield beach, heading towards Kessingland, there are some interesting sandstone cliffs that I’d never seen before. I didn’t even know they were there until I decided on the spur of the moment to take a walk along the beach that way. These were taken with a mixture of the Fuji X100, and the Fuji X-E1 with 14mm and 60mm lenses. It’s interesting using the two cameras side by si…

A walk to Lowestoft
Saturday 30th of July 2016
Continuing the walking theme from last time , Zoe and I walked all the way to Lowestoft town centre and back today, a distance of just under 12 km, and taking us 2 hours 45 minutes. We’re both fans of Pokémon Go, primarily since it provides some pretty good motivation to go out and walk a lot, so naturally we had it active on our phones on the way into town. Alas, location data, full screen brigh…

Fuji 14mm at the beach
Sunday 16th of August 2015
Strictly speaking I shouldn’t be doing this. The rules state that one should only use a single lens for the year, and I chose the Fuji 35mm f/1.4, yet here I am dallying with the 14mm f/2.8. In my defence, I like to think I’ve been photographing for long enough now that maybe I don’t need to stick quite so rigidly to what is essentially a learning exercise. I’m still primarily shooting with the …

OCOLOY Week 23
Sunday 16th of August 2015
I will admit up front that I cheated just slightly with this week’s post, in that a couple of the pictures aren’t from the previous week’s shooting, but are instead from around a month ago when Zoe and I went to a nearby forest. Still, had I been actively participating in my project at the time, I would have used those pictures, so it’s not too much of a stretch. tap and blind shadows tap and …

Fuji 14mm brief initial impressions
Saturday 15th of August 2015
I finally saved up enough to get a lens I’ve wanted for quite a while now: the Fuji XF 14mm f/2.8 R . This article is some of my first thoughts about the lens, in no particular order. Here’s my lens family now: Fuji lenses: 14mm, 35mm f/1.4, 18 – 55mm 14mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4, 18 – 55mm It’s about half way between the 35 and 18 – 55 in size and weight, and balances just fine on my X-E1. It comes with a…

OCOLOY Week 11
Wednesday 1st of April 2015
I’m really starting to enjoy using this camera and lens combo now, and more importantly it feels just as comfortable and familiar as my X100 did after a year of use. I no longer feel constrained by the 50mm-e field of view; instead I’m simply accustomed to it and am able to recognise or dismiss potential scenes accordingly. The lens itself is not much of an issue either: for the type of shooting I…

Holiday camera: Fuji X-E1 and XF 35mm
Monday 14th of April 2014
As mentioned in my Day 1 post, I took my Fuji X-E1 and XF 35mm f/1.4 lens to Malta for a week. I limited myself to just the one prime lens for two reasons, the main one being size and weight. The 35mm is quite a light lens, and given I spent most of my time with it in my hand (secured with a Gordy’s wrist strap ), that was certainly a point in its favour. Plus, although with the hood it sticks …
