Winter Sky
Monday 10th of November 2014
One of the best things about winter, from a photographer’s perspective, is the light – the low sun makes for a an almost all-day-long ‘golden hour’, and when combined with the stark, leafless trees, can provide some wonderful picture opportunities. The cold weather also brings frequently gloomy skies, but every now and then the clouds clear enough for the low sun to shine through. winter sky, wid…

Fog in the Morning
Monday 29th of September 2014
It’s not often we get fog like this in the morning, so I felt compelled to take advantage of it with a nice walk to the beach before work. lost cat poster bike warning sign bollard on cycle path water tower office Office building in front of our local water tower trees in two layers of fog dewy spider webs beach grass It’s quite an odd experience walking on a foggy beach. beach plant dog walker on…

Covehithe
Friday 19th of September 2014
Covehithe is a tiny hamlet a short way south of Lowestoft, home to a partially ruined church, some houses, some pig farms, a beach, and not a lot else. Since it’s not far from where we live, Zoe and I decided to visit one afternoon in late summer. overgrown postbox field next to St. Andrew’s Church front of St. Andrew’s Church St. Andrew’s Church graveyard in front of church ruined walls Zoe taki…

Fog at Night
Friday 19th of September 2014
Fog has always fascinated me – the way it makes things look is obviously different, but also the way it mutes sounds, and disorients the senses. At night time these effects are amplified further, with large patches of grey that fade out into unknown darkness. lamp post shadow Odd shadow below a lamp post backlit spider web shady alley Fog is great for light rays bright bollards The street lights l…

London Streets
Monday 21st of July 2014
Saturday was a bit of a gamble, weather-wise – originally forecast to be a toasty 29°, this was later amended to warn of possible storms, so the employer-organised picnic Zoe and I were going to in London was cancelled. Having already bought our train tickets, we decided to have a day out in London anyway, and have lunch with my brother and his girlfriend. The 08:00 train from Lowestoft to Ipswic…

Holiday camera: Fuji X-E1 and XF 35mm
Monday 14th of April 2014
As mentioned in my Day 1 post, I took my Fuji X-E1 and XF 35mm f/1.4 lens to Malta for a week. I limited myself to just the one prime lens for two reasons, the main one being size and weight. The 35mm is quite a light lens, and given I spent most of my time with it in my hand (secured with a Gordy’s wrist strap ), that was certainly a point in its favour. Plus, although with the hood it sticks …

Holiday in Malta: Day 3
Thursday 3rd of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 My destination for today was Għardira, the beach resort in Mellieħa , and being almost at the other end of the island from the flat, it was a two-hour bus ride away. Before I set off, I made myself a packed lunch and grabbed a bottle of Kinnie, a ‘bittersweet soft drink made from oranges and aromatic herbs’, native to Malta. bo…

[photography] DPI is easy
Wednesday 5th of February 2014
Really it is, and yet I see so many people get confused about the concept. In a way it’s understandable, given the amount of misinformation out there, so here’s my attempt to explain it as simply as possible. DPI is about physical size This is the essential detail. Everything else stems from this, the concept of physical dimensions. It’s part of the name: dots per inch . A digital image can’t h…
