Holiday in Malta 2017, day 6
Monday 1st of May 2017
And so we come to the final day. Indulging in an abundance of caution, we decided not to go anywhere further than walking distance away, lest we be late for our flight home. Even though the flight wasn’t until 8 in the evening, we still felt it prudent to arrive several hours early, even if it meant sitting in the departure lounge reading to pass the time. Still! That doesn’t mean we didn’t go an…

Today, Marsaxlokk again, this time for lunch. The weather was a bit dull and grey, and we felt like having a nice relaxed, lazy day, so we didn’t want to do anything too adventurous. boats on the shore of Pretty Bay colourful boat prow yellow and orange floats boat propped up for repair lifejackets on a small boat fishing nets spread out on the ground We had lunch at a place called Southeast Café.…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 4
Saturday 22nd of April 2017
Last time I went to Malta I never visited Gozo, the island to the north-west. Time to rectify that! After a rather long bus journey from one end of Malta to the other, we arrived at the ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa, and joined the rather long queue. ferry vehicle loading Zoe on the ferry to Gozo The ferry ride itself is about half an hour, so it wasn’t too long before we were in Victoria, the larges…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 3 (part 2)
Thursday 20th of April 2017
Il-waqfa li ymiss : Rabat, and thence Mdina. Eventually, at least – we got a bit lost in Rabat as a result of my not-very-clear memory of the town’s layout, and my attempt to find what I thought was a nice café (it wasn’t that great in the end). petrol station in Rabat narrow alleyway me in a circular mirror After lunch we headed into Mdina itself. bright blue door plant pot in the sun ramp and st…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 3 (part 1)
Wednesday 19th of April 2017
Today was quite a busy one, so I’m splitting this post into two parts to avoid having 33 pictures one one page. blue railings on a red wall First up: the Blue Grotto. We had planned on going here the previous day but the bus didn’t show up, which turned out to be a good thing as it started raining not long after we got on a different bus to head back to the flat. hikers at the airport bus stop The…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 2
Sunday 16th of April 2017
This day: Valletta, the capital city of Malta. We were a bit concerned as the weather forecast was for cloud and rain, but we got lucky: it stayed sunny almost the whole day, only raining once we were on the bus back to the flat. We started out with a short wander around Birżebbuġa, where the flat is located, then had a coffee while waiting for the bus. looking down at power cables Zoe and a frien…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 1
Sunday 16th of April 2017
Three years after my first holiday in Malta , where I went alone, this April I went again, this time with Zoe. While it was nice the first time to not worry about anyone but myself when wandering around, it was obviously much more pleasant to have my wife with me :) planes at the terminal Our flight out this time was fairly late – we didn’t arrive in Malta until 21:00 local time, so there wasn’t …

Holiday in Malta, Day 8
Friday 11th of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 My last day in Malta! Although my plane wasn’t until 20:35, I didn’t want to go anywhere too far away in case there was a problem with buses or something, so we decided we’d visit Marsaskala again, like we did on my first day. Before that though, I went for another walk around Birżebbuġa, because I was curious about wha the big …

Holiday in Malta, Day 7
Tuesday 8th of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 My last full day in Malta, and it was a lazy one – I got up late, and didn’t really go anywhere adventurous, instead opting to go to Marsaxlokk again for lunch with my parents. Before that, though, I went for a walk around Birżebbuġa since I’d not really explored it much yet. backlit street sidelit postbox fruit seller newly-bui…

Holiday in Malta: Day 6
Monday 7th of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Even though it’s not really a fishing village, lots of people in Birżebbuġa own boats. boats The town is pretty small and quiet, so if you’re after somewhere like that, I’d recommend it for a holiday. From around the start of April, the weather starts getting comfortably warm; before that it can be quite cold even when the sky i…

Holiday in Malta: Day 5
Saturday 5th of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 The weather forcast for today was not promising, but fortunately it wasn’t accurate either – the sun was out and the wind was pretty mild, so all in all the temperature was quite pleasant. Holiday in Malta: Day 4
Friday 4th of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 The long bus journeys of the previous day gave me plenty of time to peruse the Holiday Bus Map and decide where to go next. Holiday Bus Map Holiday Bus Map Ta’Qali crafts village sounded interesting, so that was today’s destination. As the map shows, there’s no direct bus from Birżebbuġa so I had to go via Valletta, which thank…

Holiday in Malta: Day 3
Thursday 3rd of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 My destination for today was Għardira, the beach resort in Mellieħa , and being almost at the other end of the island from the flat, it was a two-hour bus ride away. Before I set off, I made myself a packed lunch and grabbed a bottle of Kinnie, a ‘bittersweet soft drink made from oranges and aromatic herbs’, native to Malta. bo…

Holiday in Malta: Day 2
Wednesday 2nd of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 This post, and most of the others in this series from now on, will be a little more image-heavy than Day 1’s Despite waking up fairly early – around 8 local time – I didn’t get out of bed for quite a while, instead enjoying the lack of pressure to be anywhere at a particular time. The flat, like many in Malta (and I suppose othe…

Holiday in Malta: Day 1
Tuesday 1st of April 2014
Posts in this series: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 On Sunday the 24th of March I left England for a seven day trip to Malta . It was the first proper holiday I’d taken in around 20 years and naturally, since photography is my hobby, I took a camera: my Fuji X-E1 and the Fuji XF 35mm f⁄1.4 lens. I also have an X100 and the 18 – 55 lens, but I took only the 35 for two reasons: firs…
