Southwold in winter
Saturday 28th of January 2017
I thought we might get lucky with the weather today, and manage to get some nice shiny winter pictures in the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold, but although it was sunny on the drive there, as we arrived the clouds moved in and flattened all the light. Still, it’s kind of an appropriate aesthetic, the grey overcast weather reflecting the unbusy nature of a seaside town in winter. Took the 18 – 55 a…

30-day photo challenge, day 1
Wednesday 4th of January 2017
I guess ‘challenge’ isn’t the right word really, more of an inspiration: this is a list of photo idea prompts for the next 30 days, which I saw on Rinike’s blog . Self-portrait What you wore Clouds Something green After dark Obsession Changes to come Routine Someone you love Childhood memory Something blue Sunset Cannot live without Eyes Silhouette A good habit Technology Your shoes Something you…

Via London
Wednesday 26th of October 2016
Yesterday I had to go to London on business, so obviously I took my camera (the X100 this time) and spent some of my lunch break and some time after work taking pictures. car windscreen on the drive to the station train seat reservation card reflection in gate sign for Notting Hill Preparatory School battered old car people seated eating street food worker bracing ladder rubbish outside shop windo…

Gorleston, town
Monday 17th of October 2016
The second set of pictures from yesterday’s wander around more-than-just-the-seafront of Gorleston. I still haven’t ventured fully into the town centre (I think? maybe I have and this really is all there is to it and if I keep going I’ll be in Great Yarmouth ); perhaps next weekend! Shall try taking my X100 then, perhaps with X-E1 and 14 and 60mm lenses as backup. I hope the future Fuji 50mm f/…

Gorleston, see the sea
Sunday 16th of October 2016
Doesn’t feel like a week since my last wander around Gorleston seafront, and the weather was not so shiny this time, hence the black and white. This is kind of the first of two vaguely related posts; I took them on the same day, but more than that they both sort of illustrate aspects of Gorleston in a non-glamorous way. Used the 18 – 55 again. Still don’t like it. palm tree blowing in the wind broke…

The Peak District: Mam Tor
Monday 19th of September 2016
This weekend we visited the Peak District to meet some friends, and while the weather forecast predicted “mostly cloudy”, we were very fortunate to actually get “mostly sunny”. On Saturday we hiked up Mam Tor . I took three Fuji lenses: the 14mm, the 35mm f/1.4 and the 60mm macro. The 60 certainly got the most use here, which didn’t surprise me – it’s a natural fit to my preference for ‘abstract’…

Boring Pictures
Sunday 4th of September 2016
I remember reading many years ago about a book called Boring Postcards . It’s just a collection of postcards assembled by Martin Parr that are all, well, boring: pictures of car parks, office receptions, bus terminals, that sort of thing. It’s fascinating! At first it’s just amusing how ridiculous the idea is, but it gets you wondering: why do these things even exist? Who thought it anybody wou…

OCOLOY Week 52
Thursday 7th of April 2016
And here it is, the final week ! It’s been quite the journey, and I think has served its purpose excellently. I know my X-E1 and 35/1.4 now, their strengths and weaknesses, and I can set them up for a shot instinctively. I’m comfortable with the 50mm-e field of view, which I certainly wasn’t in the beginning . One perhaps surprising result of this experience is that it’s really dulled my cravi…

OCOLOY Week 51
Wednesday 30th of March 2016
For this penultimate week, I decided to bend the rules a little, in that I actually used my X100 all week instead of the X-E1 and 35/1.4, thus foregoing the ‘one camera’ and ‘one lens’ aspects entirely. Not even the same focal length. But man have I missed the X100. I sent it to my brother months ago since he wanted to see if that 35mm-e field of view suited him before buying the equivalent lens f…

OCOLOY Week 48
Monday 29th of February 2016
All this week I’ve felt like this OCOLOY post was going to be pretty good, as I made a decent effort to get out with my camera several times and got some nice pictures as a result. I would have written this on time, too, except I got distracted by my shiny new printer, a Canon Pro-10S. It’s an A3 pigment ink printer, and it’s lovely – already I’ve gone through most of a 50 pack of PermaJet matte p…

OCOLOY Week 47
Sunday 21st of February 2016
Following on from marriage on Tuesday, Zoe and I went on a small honeymoon to a country house hotel in northern Norfolk, courtesy of her sister. It was a little dark by the time we got there, thanks to some roadworks delaying us by half an hour on the way, but we still had time to enjoy a lovely walk around the large National Trust park behind the hotel. country garden livestock warning branches a…

OCOLOY Week 45
Sunday 7th of February 2016
Quite a ‘close to home’ week, this one, in that I didn’t really venture any further afield than Lowestoft, at least not anywhere photographically interesting. There industrial estate near Beccles where we went for breakfast, at a café called Posh Pigs, might have borne some fruit, if the weather was nicer and we’d had more free time to spend there, so it might be worth a return trip (even if just …

OCOLOY Week 44
Sunday 31st of January 2016
Busy at work this week, and you know what that means: not many pictures taken – few enough, in fact, that I had to scavenge some from last week to make 7. The week wasn’t a total lazy-fest though, as I’ve started going running again, 3 times a week, using a 10K training thing on my phone. I say ‘running’ but at this stage it’s actually 80% walking, but given how unfit I am, running for 1 minute at…

OCOLOY Week 43
Sunday 24th of January 2016
Bit of a slow week, this one, with no good pictures taken during the most of the week – all but one of this week’s pictures are from my trip to Hunstanton on Saturday. I find it interesting the difference in choice of pictures for that post versus this one; I can’t quite explain it but they seem less… abstract? Prettier? light house and coast guard three black rocks cliff face big square rock …

OCOLOY Week 42
Sunday 17th of January 2016
Christmas and New Year are quite the schedule disruptors, as evidenced by the nearly 4 week break since the previous OCOLOY post and during that time I did quite a bit of shooting with lenses other than the 35mm. The regular weekly posting will now resume, though, and with only ten more to go! I’ve decided that when I finish I’m going to do a Top 10, since a ‘best of each week’ isn’t really practi…
