OCOLOY Week 37
Monday 23rd of November 2015
I was getting a little worried that this week would be a washout, with the weather generally being wet and windy, but fortunately there were a few days of shine and I made an effort to use that nice light. Winter sun is probably my favourite kind of light – it combines the low and long shadows of a sunset/sunrise, but with a colder, whiter, more etherial feel. road arrow road arrow tree and walk…

OCOLOY Week 36
Sunday 15th of November 2015
Somewhat chastened by my lack of effort last week, this week I resolved to try harder, resulting in two pre-work bike rides to the beach, and one nice hour-long stroll around north Lowestoft seafront which, despite the generally dull overcast weather, produced plenty of pleasing pictures. It’s certainly somewhere I’ll revisit, particularly on sunnier days. This is the first time in many weeks wher…

OCOLOY Week 35
Sunday 8th of November 2015
Oh dear. This week was mostly a disappointment, photographically, as I spent almost no time out taking pictures. The short time I did spend at Oulton Broad yesterday with Zoe did prove fruitful, though – the last picture in particular I really like, and that somewhat makes up for the rest of the week’s mediocrity. So few little time did I spec with the camera, in fact, that this week I only have 4…

OCOLOY Week 34
Sunday 1st of November 2015
Rather last-minute this week, but what a productive minute it was! During the week the weather had once again been meh, and so had my motivation, but with Sunday came fog. Fog is always great for creative inspiration, I think because it’s so rare, and so there’s a novelty factor involved. no access gate no access gate tatters on barbed wire tatters on barbed wire Hamilton Road bus stop Hamil…

OCOLOY Week 33
Tuesday 27th of October 2015
Much like last week , the weather this week was mostly grey and dull, making me really feel the onset of winter, and its associated emotional blues. This led me to poke around with some monochrome conversions in Capture One, and on a whim I tried a less contrasty one with a slightly brighter tone curve. I really like it, which is surprising to me because although I’ve often felt I should try to…

OCOLOY Week 32
Monday 19th of October 2015
Weather this week: almost entirely rainy or heavily overcast. Most of these pictures were shot at ISO 2000; the lowest was at 400, and that had to be pushed a bit in Capture One. Lens this week: Fuji 18 – 55mm! Yep, I decided this week I needed a break from the exclusive 35mm usage, as a sort of preview of things to come once I’m done with the OCOLOY project. The 18 – 55 is odd. The stabilisation I fi…

OCOLOY Week 31
Friday 16th of October 2015
Another busy week, alas not photographically: deadlines are looming at work which has left me little time or energy for taking pictures. I have, however, been spending a lot of time thinking about meaning . What do I want to say with my pictures? I feel like I’m approaching Step 4 in Andy Ilachinski’s Eightfold Path Toward Self-Discovery , but it’s a long hard climb to reach it. I want more out …

OCOLOY Week 30
Sunday 4th of October 2015
Thirty! It seems like the end is in sight now, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s been an interesting experience being limited to one (ish) lens for so long, and having that restraint lifted… well, I’m looking forward to it if nothing else because it’ll be something new. Will I start using my 18 – 55mm lens more again? Maybe. As much as I started out not feeling all that comfortable with…

OCOLOY Week 29
Sunday 27th of September 2015
I made much more of an effort this week to get out and take pictures. I even got in my car and drove somewhere ! (Amazing, I know) As a result, I had quite a few more pictures to choose from than in previous weeks, which of course necessitated sharpening my editing (in the selection sense) skills. This, I think, is one of the challenges of this whole project: picking a small number of really good…

OCOLOY Week 27
Tuesday 15th of September 2015
Quite a local week, this one, as I didn’t really have time to stray far from the house during the day, and the weather was often quite a disincentive to venture further out anyway. Still, there were moments of light, although few enough that I had to use some of the photos I took the previous week to make up the numbers (which allowed by The Rules!). Regarding the last picture: yes, that’s our hou…

OCOLOY Week 26
Sunday 6th of September 2015
This week I was definitely more active than last – I made a good effort to actually take some photos every day, even if I didn’t always go beyond my back garden. Saturday was perhaps the most ‘adventurous’, as Zoe and I went to Raveningham Country Fair . It was a little more… local than last year’s Heveningham Hall fair , and simply because of the smaller scale we were able to more or less s…

OCOLOY Week 24
Sunday 23rd of August 2015
I’m wavering. Black and white, or colour? I can’t settle on one, I like both. I think it’s the weather – shiny days make me want to capture in colour, and the weather represented by this week’s pictures is certainly sunny (and for walking around Ipswich, sometimes uncomfortably so). Although I did a bit of shooting during the week, none of it resulted in much of interest, so all of these pictures …

OCOLOY Week 23
Sunday 16th of August 2015
I will admit up front that I cheated just slightly with this week’s post, in that a couple of the pictures aren’t from the previous week’s shooting, but are instead from around a month ago when Zoe and I went to a nearby forest. Still, had I been actively participating in my project at the time, I would have used those pictures, so it’s not too much of a stretch. tap and blind shadows tap and …
