Ely: town
Thursday 17th of November 2016
Yesterday Zoe went to a teaching conference in Ely, Cambridgeshire and I decided to go with her and take photos around town while she was getting her learn on. I’ve split this into two parts: town and river . Gorleston, town
Monday 17th of October 2016
The second set of pictures from yesterday’s wander around more-than-just-the-seafront of Gorleston. I still haven’t ventured fully into the town centre (I think? maybe I have and this really is all there is to it and if I keep going I’ll be in Great Yarmouth ); perhaps next weekend! Shall try taking my X100 then, perhaps with X-E1 and 14 and 60mm lenses as backup. I hope the future Fuji 50mm f/…

Gorleston, see the sea
Sunday 16th of October 2016
Doesn’t feel like a week since my last wander around Gorleston seafront, and the weather was not so shiny this time, hence the black and white. This is kind of the first of two vaguely related posts; I took them on the same day, but more than that they both sort of illustrate aspects of Gorleston in a non-glamorous way. Used the 18 – 55 again. Still don’t like it. palm tree blowing in the wind broke…

Gorleston, a Sunday stroll
Sunday 9th of October 2016
It’s getting a bit wintersome now, with the sun hanging lower in the sky and vanishing over the horizon earlier and earlier. It’s still fairly warm, but soon it won’t be pleasant going out without a coat. It’s a nice time of year, and perhaps a bit melancholic – I mourn, in a minor way, the cheer and brightness of summer, and once again feel a little shame in knowing I didn’t really make the most …

Signs
Monday 3rd of October 2016
I took my car for its MOT this morning and since it was a nice day, I went for a nice morning walk with my Fuji X100 while I waited, and this time made an effort to use the optical viewfinder, to see if I could like it. No parking sign 1 It’s ok, I guess? I still prefer a good electronic viewfinder (the X100’s is barely adequate), but I could get used to it if I had to, I think. Mostly it just fee…

Oulton Broad Boats, and lens/camera musing
Saturday 24th of September 2016
Since the weather was lovely this evening I went for a walk around Nicholas Everitt Park in Oulton Broad with my X-E1 and 18 – 55mm lens. This was also to satisfy some curiousity I had about the lens: have I been too dismissive of it in the past? (I’ve never really enjoyed using it.) small boat prow The lens gets a lot of praise, being sharper and faster than the average kit lens, and better-built t…

The Peak District: Shatton Hall Farm
Monday 19th of September 2016
For this trip we stayed at Shatton Hall Farm Cottages, converted farm buildings turned into holiday accomodation. The houses are at the end of a narrow lane near Bamford , and the scenery is lovely. On Sunday morning we were lucky enough to get some fog still lingering around even at 9 o’clock, so I didn’t have to get up too early! Once again, a mix of mostly 14mm and 60mm. farm track Orchard Cot…

The Peak District: Mam Tor
Monday 19th of September 2016
This weekend we visited the Peak District to meet some friends, and while the weather forecast predicted “mostly cloudy”, we were very fortunate to actually get “mostly sunny”. On Saturday we hiked up Mam Tor . I took three Fuji lenses: the 14mm, the 35mm f/1.4 and the 60mm macro. The 60 certainly got the most use here, which didn’t surprise me – it’s a natural fit to my preference for ‘abstract’…

Boring Pictures
Sunday 4th of September 2016
I remember reading many years ago about a book called Boring Postcards . It’s just a collection of postcards assembled by Martin Parr that are all, well, boring: pictures of car parks, office receptions, bus terminals, that sort of thing. It’s fascinating! At first it’s just amusing how ridiculous the idea is, but it gets you wondering: why do these things even exist? Who thought it anybody wou…

Aching to return
Saturday 27th of August 2016
Recently a kind soul replicated Fuji’s lovely JPEG film simulations as Capture One colour profiles , and the results are magnificent. This further means I now have access to a very close approximation of Classic Chrome, which my X-E1 can’t otherwise simulate. I’d tried it out a few times this past week but nothing really seemed to work that well with it. Until tonight. I was idly fiddling about w…

Pakefield and Kessingland Beach and Cliffs
Monday 22nd of August 2016
Just a bit south of Pakefield beach, heading towards Kessingland, there are some interesting sandstone cliffs that I’d never seen before. I didn’t even know they were there until I decided on the spur of the moment to take a walk along the beach that way. These were taken with a mixture of the Fuji X100, and the Fuji X-E1 with 14mm and 60mm lenses. It’s interesting using the two cameras side by si…

A walk to Lowestoft
Saturday 30th of July 2016
Continuing the walking theme from last time , Zoe and I walked all the way to Lowestoft town centre and back today, a distance of just under 12 km, and taking us 2 hours 45 minutes. We’re both fans of Pokémon Go, primarily since it provides some pretty good motivation to go out and walk a lot, so naturally we had it active on our phones on the way into town. Alas, location data, full screen brigh…

Dunwich: a walk in the woods
Monday 25th of July 2016
Taking advantage of the excellent weather we’ve been having lately, Zoe and I went for a walk in Dunwich Forest. We also got a bit disoriented on the way back and ended up crossing Westleton Heath, taking our distance walked to 10km. Good thing we need the exercise! path into the woods woods edge wheat field wheat field beyond the trees cleared line through the woods raised path over boggy ground …
