Holiday in Malta 2017, day 5
Saturday 29th of April 2017
Today, Marsaxlokk again, this time for lunch. The weather was a bit dull and grey, and we felt like having a nice relaxed, lazy day, so we didn’t want to do anything too adventurous. boats on the shore of Pretty Bay colourful boat prow yellow and orange floats boat propped up for repair lifejackets on a small boat fishing nets spread out on the ground We had lunch at a place called Southeast Café.…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 4
Saturday 22nd of April 2017
Last time I went to Malta I never visited Gozo, the island to the north-west. Time to rectify that! After a rather long bus journey from one end of Malta to the other, we arrived at the ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa, and joined the rather long queue. ferry vehicle loading Zoe on the ferry to Gozo The ferry ride itself is about half an hour, so it wasn’t too long before we were in Victoria, the larges…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 3 (part 2)
Thursday 20th of April 2017
Il-waqfa li ymiss : Rabat, and thence Mdina. Eventually, at least – we got a bit lost in Rabat as a result of my not-very-clear memory of the town’s layout, and my attempt to find what I thought was a nice café (it wasn’t that great in the end). petrol station in Rabat narrow alleyway me in a circular mirror After lunch we headed into Mdina itself. bright blue door plant pot in the sun ramp and st…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 3 (part 1)
Wednesday 19th of April 2017
Today was quite a busy one, so I’m splitting this post into two parts to avoid having 33 pictures one one page. blue railings on a red wall First up: the Blue Grotto. We had planned on going here the previous day but the bus didn’t show up, which turned out to be a good thing as it started raining not long after we got on a different bus to head back to the flat. hikers at the airport bus stop The…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 2
Sunday 16th of April 2017
This day: Valletta, the capital city of Malta. We were a bit concerned as the weather forecast was for cloud and rain, but we got lucky: it stayed sunny almost the whole day, only raining once we were on the bus back to the flat. We started out with a short wander around Birżebbuġa, where the flat is located, then had a coffee while waiting for the bus. looking down at power cables Zoe and a frien…

Holiday in Malta 2017, day 1
Sunday 16th of April 2017
Three years after my first holiday in Malta , where I went alone, this April I went again, this time with Zoe. While it was nice the first time to not worry about anyone but myself when wandering around, it was obviously much more pleasant to have my wife with me :) planes at the terminal Our flight out this time was fairly late – we didn’t arrive in Malta until 21:00 local time, so there wasn’t …

Gunton Cliffs
Saturday 15th of April 2017
Had a bit of a headache, and had been sitting indoors all day, so I went for a nice walk around Gunton Cliffs. Some X-T2 + XF23/2 black and whites
Saturday 1st of April 2017
Another trip to Norwich today to get some Euros for our Malta trip on Monday. I hadn’t planned on making these pictures monochrome, but rendering one of them later as black and white made me think to give all the ‘good’ ones the same treatment. cycle path over foot bridge construction work on a building on King Street bush growing up a brick wall graffiti on a brick wall old man looking at market …

Short walks on the beach
Thursday 30th of March 2017
Since it was a nice evening, Zoe and I decided to go for a walk on Kessingland beach. Turns out once the sun gets low enough it’s not actually that warm any more, plus the early weeks of pregnancy are quite the obstacle course of nausea. So, not a particularly long walk, but a nice one nonetheless. X-T2, 23/2 tattered red bunting ‘Fresh Eggs’ sign soft shadows on sea wall Zoe beyond some beach gra…

Carlton Marshes, somewhat desiccated
Sunday 26th of March 2017
I last went to Carlton Marshes just under two months ago , and it was rather wet and muddy then, despite the sun. Now, in late March after a week or so of sun and no rain, it’s much drier. Still cold, but not unpleasantly so – in fact, by the end of the walk I was wishing I hadn’t brought my coat. More 23/2, this time in Norwich
Saturday 25th of March 2017
The shiny weather continues unabated, and even felt quite warm by around 11. Since Zoe and I were going to Norwich anyway I obviously took the new lens. One thing I’ve noticed looking over these pictures is that I get the impression I’m using the 23 like a 35, and not taking advantage of the wider field of view. Too many flat compositions! Zoe on a foot bridge old buildings above the path orange c…

Fuji 23mm f/2 first impressions & rambling
Friday 24th of March 2017
When I got my first Fuji interchangeable lens camera, the X-E1, almost four years ago, I got it with the Fuji 35m f/1.4 lens, which I didn’t initially get along with. Prior to that I’d been using a Fuji X100 for almost two years, and it was quite uncomfortable at first going from a 23mm lens to a 35mm. The latter felt constricting, and I never seemed to have enough vertical space, meaning I felt p…

Southwold, spring
Monday 20th of March 2017
Zoe’s parents came down to visit for the weekend, and luckily the weather on Sunday cooperated somewhat when we went to Southwold together. The forecast had said it wasn’t going to rain (it did, eventually) but it also said “mostly cloudy” so I wasn’t expecting much. It was a pleasant surprise when the sun did come out! Lowestoft and cloudy
Monday 20th of March 2017
It had been a “mostly cloudy” kind of day, but the occasional break for some sunlight gave me hope so I went for a wander around Lowestoft pier and waterfront. Alas, almost no sun. Now using Disqus comments
Friday 17th of March 2017
Adobe bought out LiveFyre and shut down the comments system for personal blogs, which is a shame because LiveFyre was a fairly good fit for commenting on this site. It had its issues – the admin interface was terrible and never worked properly – but it loaded right onto the page, not in an iframe, meaning I could use CSS to have full control over the look of the comments. Alas, Disqus loads into a…
